It's been quite a few years since I read it and maybe I was stupider back then, but I thought the first 2/3rds of Death Note was pretty good. There was a little too much "Misa Misa" crap though...

Yes, I love a lot of 'long' movies, but that's when they're emotionally involving with artistic integrity and value.
That's for art, not simple entertainment. Death Note did not warrant 12 volumes since it didn't really have anything to say.

There aren't many jobs in pure anything last I checked. Applied work is virtually always more reliable, for obvious reasons. People prefer to pay for work they can actually see.
